AFTER SCHOOL INITIATIVE

Although 28 million children have parents who work outside the home, many of these children do not have access to affordable, quality care during the hours before and after school (1997 Annual Average Figures from the Current Population Survey, US Department of Labor). After school programs that creatively and strategically approach this window of time give children a better shot at a brighter future.

Recognizing the great need for after school program funding in South Carolina for children in grades 1-5, the After School Initiative is designed to offer structured activities that develop children mentally, physically and emotionally. By targeting rural, community based programs, the Foundation aims to reach underserved children and families in South Carolina.

FATHERHOOD INITIATIVE

Father absence is one of the most disturbing trends of our time. The statistics regarding the relationship between father absence and negative outcomes for children indicate a growing problem that has significant social and economic consequences.

So important is this issue that the Foundation has committed to a multi-year, $8 million effort to support community programs that strengthen fatherhood and the role of fathers in the family. This Fatherhood Initiative, Reducing Poverty Through Father Engagement, is designed to reduce poverty by re-engaging absent fathers in the lives of their children.

RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES  INITIATIVE

From its founding in 1973, the Saint Ann Foundation, of Cleveland, Ohio, a sister Foundation of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, has exhibited an interest in supporting congregations of women religious in their efforts with the poor and underserved members of society. A foundation study conducted in 2001 of the ministries of women religious in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee (Leadership Conference of Women Religious Region VI) and South Carolina identified a number of challenges facing these congregations.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is proud to partner with the St. Ann Foundation in this initiative designed to assist the religious communities in South Carolina.
