After School Initiative

Although 28 million children have parents who work outside the home, many of these children do not have access to affordable, quality care during the hours before and after school (1997 Annual Average Figures from the Current Population Survey, US Department of Labor). After school programs that creatively and strategically approach this window of time give children a better shot at a brighter future.
Recognizing the great need for after school program funding in South Carolina, the Foundation undertook research to determine the most effective, best practices currently in use.
Addressing after school programming for children in grades 1-5, the initiative is designed to offer structured activities that develop children mentally, physically and emotionally. By targeting rural, community based programs, the Foundation aims to reach underserved children and families in South Carolina.
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina,
through its After School Initiative was instrumental in
the development and ongoing operation of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance
(SCAA). The mission of the SCAA is to raise awareness, help
to raise sustainability and promote the importance of quality
after school programs in South Carolina.
